Out of Exile: my Listener feature on Paul Thomas

Last month, I had a feature article on New Zealand crime writer Paul Thomas published in the Arts & Books pages of the New Zealand Listener magazine.

Thomas is a fascinating guy - along with hauling local crime fiction into modernity with his comic hardboiled tales in the mid 1990s (although, like several other Kiwi success stories he was also claimed by our Aussie cousins across the ditch - Thomas won the inaugural Ned Kelly Award for his second crime tale, INSIDE DOPE), he has written several sports biographies, amongst many other things, and has now returned to the crime fiction fold after a decade-long absence.

I really enjoyed interviewing Thomas for the Listener article, and then getting to share the stage with him, Paul Cleave, and Vanda Symon at the New Zealand International Arts Festival over the weekend. it's great to see local crime writing going from strength to strength.

You can now read the full Listener feature online, here.

Have you read DEATH ON DEMAND, or any of Thomas's other work? What do you think of his crime writing? Comments welcome.
